Slapped Cheeks and Specs

It seems as though whenever I write about Zane, writing about seizures naturally follows.

Though Zane’s pediatrician didn’t officially diagnose it (because I didn’t take him in), it sure appeared as though he had Fifth Disease over the past week or so. He exhibited the signs (the slapped cheek being the most obvious). His brother had it the week before, so it was a logical place for my mind to travel. And since illness lowers the threshold for seizures, his seizures not only returned but also increased.

Zane’s had at least one every day this week. It’s really heartbreaking to see him go through one. The neurologist gave us permission to increase his medication, which we may do beginning tonight. It goes without saying that having a reason for the reappearance is somewhat reassuring.

On a happier note, Zane was way overdue for his ophthalmology visit. I took him earlier this week. The doctor said that Zane’s vision has improved, so he’s written a prescription for weaker glasses. Yay, Zane! Also, Zane does not have to go under the knife again (at least not presently) to re-correct his ptosis. There was an unfortunate mishap that occurred after his 2012 surgery, which led us to believe he may have to undergo the procedure again. So…good news.

This weekend, we’ll go to pick out new specs for the little man! I’m pretty excited about it. The doc recommended transitional lenses, which seems like a great idea considering the biking and swimming we plan to do this year.
