Crazy Spring

Poor Zane. Sometimes it seems like he just can’t catch a break. If it’s not the seizures, then it’s something else.

This past week, Zane’s GI issues returned. The retching he experienced back in October—which sent us to the ER in Denver—is back. It was so bad this past weekend that Zane didn’t get a whole lot of the caloric intake he needs. It was either replaced with a dosing of Pedialyte or thrown up.

On Friday I left a message for the GI specialist’s nurse. When I didn’t hear from her by mid-morning today, I called again. She consulted with Dr. D. In order to curb the vomiting and retching, Zane has to take yet another medication. Unfortunately, it is a compounded drug that can only be filled by one pharmacy in town. But the nurse called the script into our small-town drug store that cannot fulfill the prescription. So I wasn’t able to pick it up today. Hopefully we’ll have it sometime tomorrow.

Zane is scheduled to have his biannual ultrasound in the a.m. This is the one that screens for Wilm’s tumor (a kidney cancer to which kiddos with T18 are more susceptible) and hepatoblastoma (i.e., liver cancer). We’ve decided to make this test encapsulate the renal ultrasound ordered by his urologist, as well. No point having to go to the hospital twice.

We’ve had a good run with little to no appointments throughout the winter. Now that spring is here, the medical appointments seem to be kicking into high gear. On the horizon for Zane: the ultrasound (tomorrow), an in-town urology appointment (though the doctor really wants to see him in Denver for some reason), the allergist, the GI doctor (who also wants to see Zane in Denver but cannot accommodate the May visit), and our upcoming trip to Denver in May to see the orthopedist and the ophthalmologist.

With all this and the start of baseball season for J (practice is three times a week), I am going to be one busy mom. *Deep breaths*
