It’s hard to believe Zane will be seven tomorrow. In many
ways, it feels as though the time has zoomed by. In other ways, the memory of
his birth and the days following revive some of those same emotions we felt
after he was born and rushed off to the NICU—and the devastation we experienced
at hearing his diagnosis.
Zane’s sixth year was filled with a lot of medical issues—for
both him and for me. I was diagnosed with breast cancer that year, and Zane
found himself at the hospital at least three times. We went to Denver
for surgery to correct the ptosis in his left eye, and then wound up back the
emergency room at Children’s a few months later for what turned out to be GI
issues that couldn’t be deciphered in Durango .
Just before his sixth birthday, Zane started having seizures—something
we thought had resolved at seven months of age. He had an EEG in Durango and began his
ongoing journey to control his seizure activity.
But he’s always remained such a trooper, such an inspiration
to me, and oh-so happy through it all. I truly am honored to be his mother.
