The Complexity of Zane

It sounds like a movie, doesn’t it?

Zane’s pediatrician had told me last week that he’s a very complex kiddo. We absolutely know this, but it’s the first time in six years she has said this. He truly can be an enigma at times. But we think *fingers crossed* that we have a few things figured out—for now.

Dilated Ureter: I mentioned the concern over this in a previous post. Zane’s ultrasound showed a dilated ureter, which (internet research had told me) may indicate the need for ureter reimplantation surgery. He’s already had this. The urologist said there is absolutely nothing to be concerned about. But because I heard the news indirectly through the ped, I didn’t have the opportunity to ask for specifics. But we see the urologist on Monday anyway, so I’ll get the scoop then.

Seizure Activity: Zane’s Das, followed by super hyperactivity and blinking may not be seizure activity at all. We learned this after 1) a full night of awakeness where that is all Zane did—the ENTIRE night;  2) one-half hour of sleep in the morning followed by more of the same behaviors; 3) a trip to the pediatrician’s office to address the behavior; 4) a call to the neurologist by the ped where she described her observations.

The lowdown: The neurologist believes this is not seizure activity. Instead, he thinks that it’s either a reverse reaction to the Cyproheptadine, which usually has a sedating effect, but in some kids can do the reverse, OR a new behavior in Zane. We’re hoping it’s the latter.

We gave Zane melatonin last night for sleep. He didn’t wake up once J As of this morning, we’re seeing some of the old Zane reemerge! J had him laughing and smiling—something we hadn’t observed much of at all in the past week. Kuddos to awesome big brother!

So today—on the last day of Spring Break—the boys and I are off to swim and have ice cream. After all, we have a little something to celebrate.

  1. Susan, I think you have reason to celebrate too. You deal with a lot, and do it with determination until you figure out a solution.

By the way, I love your new profile picture. Beautiful smile!

  2. Oh poor Zane--that must be exhausting and confusing for him, not being able to sleep. Glad the melatonin did the trick!!

  4. Old Zane, new Zane, it's all Zane to me. What an inspiration. Melatonin like a miracle in this case.
Thanks for your visit Susan, I think of Zane often. Best wishes to you all.
