Our son was diagnosed with Trisomy 18 five days after birth. We were told he probably would live for two months--no more. He has managed to defy the odds placed against him. Zane is now ten.

Trisomy 18
Trisomy 18 is a chromosomal condition that occurs in 1 in 7000 births. It typically proves fatal for children within the first year of life. Fewer than 10% live to celebrate their first birthdays.
Last year in April, Zane lost his Aunt Sara in a tragic car accident. She was one of those few people out in the world who truly connected with him. She would visit, so anxious to hold him. They would snuggle and cuddle together so sweetly.
God, life can be so hard. I 'm amazed sometimes at how we all forge on anyway. Heartwrenching that you, as well as your son, have lost someone who loved you both, way, way before her time. I am holding you up today in a little prayer to whoever might be listening.
Susan is a YA and Adult contemporary novelist, as well as an advocate for social change. Her essays have been published both nationally and regionally, including a brief stint in The Daily Beast. She lives in the Southwest with her family.
I love stopping here to see Zane's smiling face. I heart him.
